Hi, I’m Anton — the creator of Happy Zaffy – Out and About.

If you’ve landed here, you’ve probably guessed that I love being on the move. Whether I’m cycling through a quiet neighbourhood, wandering into a new town, discovering a hidden café, or tasting something delicious for the first time, I’m happiest when I’m exploring.

Many years ago, I worked on a cruise liner, where every country had its own little nickname. South Africans travel under the diplomatic code ZAF, so the crew started calling us Zaffies — or Zaffas, depending on who you asked. Because I was always smiling, polite, and generally in a good mood, my shipmates upgraded me to Happy Zaffy, and the name stuck. Now it’s part of the story I carry with me.

This blog grew from a simple idea: to capture the places I’ve been, the food I’ve enjoyed, and the interesting things that make life feel full.

I then had a brainwave, so many people have travelled to really special and exotic places so i expanded the blog to include other people’s experiences. If you have a story, then please feel free to contact us so that we can share your stories and experiences on this blog.

We’re not professional travellers or a food critics. we’re just people who enjoy noticing the small details — the smell of a street market, the charm of a local bakery, the view from a hilltop, the warmth of people we meet along the way. These moments deserve a home, and this space became exactly that.

A few things about me:

  • I’m sometimes on a bicycle or scooter when I’m out exploring
  • I love discovering local dishes and trying anything at least once, my only prerequisite being that it’s dead and not moving.
  • I enjoy simple adventures — the kind that make you smile without needing a passport
  • I believe every place has a story, and every meal has a memory attached to it

Here, you’ll find honest stories, real experiences, and snapshots of the world as we see it. Nothing fancy — just genuine moments worth sharing.

Thanks for joining us on this journey. Let’s keep exploring, one place and one plate at a time.
